unOrdinary is a story about a young man named John who goes to a school full of people with amazing gifts. In fact, everyone in the world is born with some kind of power, everyone that is except John. He is what is called a “cripple” in this world, a powerless person, and anyone who doesn’t have power is looked down upon because of the hierarchy that the school, and pretty much the rest of the world, has built up. How does someone who is powerless survive in a world where literal superpowers are everything? Will John be able to make it a day without being bullied? Will he ever get that slice of chocolate cake he wants so much? You’ll have to read to find out.
The story is pretty much your typical loser-turns-badass story arch as we watch John use his cunning and wits to get out of a slew of different kinds of situations. There’s plenty of secrets as well as interesting plot to get you hooked, but honestly, if you’ve read a story like this before you’ll probably be able to guess a lot of the major plot points before they drop. A few of them were genuine surprises though so that’s good in my book, and the story is very well written. If you’re able to just turn off your brain and get invested properly this is a top-notch read all around.
The art is very heavily inspired by manga, using the big over the top expressions and those wacky big tear streams and sweat drops. Occasionally as I was reading I felt that a few of the characters suffered from same face syndrome, and while some of them do, I noticed that as I read through each chapter that they had very subtle differences in their facial features. It’s not too bad, but definitely a nitpick when it comes to art.
Overall, it’s just a really nicely done action manga/comic with some angst thrown in every now and then to tug at your heartstrings. Give it a read, let me know what you like about it.
And, as always, I hope you enjoy as much as I do.
